It was a lot of low income families… How many people lived on Haley Street? And I know each and every one of them…it was magic …to look back and not see those buildings, I really don’t think it’s right.
Lincoln to me was a neighborhood. It was everybody combined. That's what Lincoln school means to me
At 9:00 the Boys Club would close. It must have been 30 kids – we would walk down Quarantina Street to Ortega and then up Ortega. And as you got your house you would go off, and these guys were all singing “Poison Ivy” or something like that…it was a wonderful experience…it was really truly a neighborhood.
Our arch rival was Franklin School, and they were a bigger school. But we always went out there and gave it our best.
The impact that Bill Van Schaick had on my life- I live it
I barely spoke any English. I met Mrs. Shurtleff in first grade. She would give me private little lessons in how to speak English. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have the love of education I have today.
I’m thankful for Lincoln School because I learned how to play tenor sax there. I went on to play in junior high and high school.
My mother was the only one of the Vans that did things for the girls. Thanks, Loie.
Santa Barbara was American Graffiti before they made the movie. We were kind of in a bubble. I think we were all very fortunate.
